For this weeks throwback Thursday, we are jumping all the way back to the year 2014 and taking a look at Jun Hyoseong’s solo debut single “Good-night Kiss”. Hyoseong was a member of the very popular 2nd generation group, “Secret”, and went on to have a pretty decent solo career after her debut! Let us look back and see how this debut has held up over time!

First off, Wow… this is quite a track! There is quite a lot going on in this song instrumentally and the progressions are quite quirky! I love the vocal chop that introduces us to the track and the way it is sparsely incorporated throughout. It is actually quite modern sounding. Also, the sweet baseline that we get in certain sections of this song is just stellar, and I wish it was brought forward even more in the production. When we are brought into the first verse of the track, I love how the heavy instrumentation in the intro is completely pulled back, and we are able to rebuild the progression from there. The sort of sultry and soft vocals in the first half of the verse, then go into this very childish and sassy little chant, which is a weird throw off from the texture that the song was originally building… However, I find it kind of fun in a weird way! Then we are thrown into a very 80’s synth influenced chorus that I think goes generally well with the flow of the track so far. The chorus builds then drops into a very trappy beat reincorporating that initial vocal chop. For its time, I think the structure of this song is quite modern and with proper production could still be a relevant song if released today. This song does a great job of incorporating a lot of different elements, while still having a flow to it. I do wish we got a little more vocally or instrumentally in the final chorus of this song. However, as a whole this song still remains quite strong and very progressive for its time!
