(G)I-DLE “Queencard” Comeback + “I feel” Album Review

The mega successful and veteran group (G)I-DLE has officially made their comeback with their mini album, “I feel”. Along with the title track, “Queencard”. Will this newest release be a chart smasher? Absolutely. Will this comeback/mini album impress me? We shall see! Let us see if this mini album gets a queencard!

“Queencard”

We open the mini album off with the title track, “Queencard”. Initially, I really like the way this song opens with the sultry bass line accompanied by Minnies deeper vocals. However, from this point I find the track begins to fall apart in its progression. We then go into more of a fifties influenced bass line in the pre-chorus which strangely transitions into a rock influenced chorus. I really cant say i’m a fan of the whiny and overexposed vocals in this section, and I find the post chorus hook to be almost unlistenable for me. I always hate having to be this harsh on songs, especially when the are produced by the members (which is a rarity to begin with). However, this song is just straight up messy and hard on the ears (mainly in the chorus). Overall, it feels like they were trying to do too much in this track and it just made it feel very in-cohesive and forgetful. For once, I am glad this song was under 3 minutes…

“Allergy”

Next up we have their pre-release track “Allergy”. This song is a somewhat y2k influenced power pop track, that is heavily reliant on its acoustic aesthetic. Not really a lot for me to dig into on this track. A very average pop song with predictable progressions and melodies. The only word I can really use to describe this track is vanilla. I commend them trying to delve into more serious social commentary in the lyrics, but this track just makes it sound a bit cheesy for me personally.

Rating: 5/10

“Lucid”

Next up we have “Lucid”, and already I am enjoying the instrumentation a lot better on this track. I like the overall darker tone this track takes on, and it seems to fit the girls vocals nicely as well. The drop is actually quite nice and adds much needed dimension to the track. Nothing overly crazy or special on this one, but still a big step up from the previous two songs.

Raint: 6.5/10

“All Night”

The next track, “All Night” is a more groovy and slap bass heavy track, that incorporates slight retro elements throughout. Again, not finding anything particularly interesting on this track, or anything I can really sink my teeth into. I really wish the vocals weren’t so monotone on this tack as it makes the song just feel one dimensional. I dp like the addition of the acoustic guitar in the precarious as a nice break up from the bass heavy track. However, as a whole I just find this track very predictable and lacking depth.

Rating: 6/10

“Paradise”

Next we have “Paradise”, which is a very straightforward, EDM influenced track. I do enjoy how smooth and floaty this song is with the atmosphere it creates. Nothing to really complain about with this track. I enjoy how complete this track feels, from front to end.

Rating: 6.5/10

“Peter Pan”

Closing out the mini album, we have the track “Peter Pan”, and for once I am just so happy it is not a ballad! This is another acoustic pop influenced track, that gives a sort of “singing around the bar” vibe to it. I do overall enjoy the instrumentation/composition on this track a lot better than “Allergy”. The addition of the little airy synth and piano was a nice touch, and the progressions in this track feel well developed. I think this was a good choice to end the mini album with.

7/10

Final Thoughts + Rating

Sadly, I really did not vibe with most tracks on this project. As a whole, the album is barley cohesive and many of the ideas they were trying to implement felt very half hearted and border line lazy in some instances. I think with more time and proper development, this mini album could have potential to be better… however, we must take it as it is. I feel with the success that (G)I-dle has garnered has perhaps soiled the creativity I think the group had in their earlier days. Might be time to go back to the drawing board.

Overall Rating: 5.5/10
