Welcome to my very first throwback Thursday review! My general goal with these posts is to look back at releases from a previous year that came out on, or about the same day I am doing my review! I think this will be a fun way to look back at previous popular k-pop releases, and see how they have held up over time. Additionally, this will be a good way to add to my repertoire of reviews!
So for my very first throwback Thursday review, we will be looking at the ever so devise track, “Signal” by Twice. This song was released on May 15th 2017, making it days away from turning 6 years old! Not gonna lie, this is making me feel a bit old! Regardless, Let us see if “Signal” has held the test of time!
To preface, I was generally a fan of this song when it came out all the way back in 2017. When I re-listened to the song, I still feel as if this could be released today and still sound fresh! Obviously the production and quality of the song sound a bit dated, but the composition and use of synths still have a unique quality. I love how we are introduced to the track with those super clean pads that transition into a heavy bass drop. From there, the use of bass plays a very strong roll in giving the track a lot of dimension, as the groove changes up a lot in this track. Although the different sections of the song have a stark difference in its rhythm, I still find they flow together nicely. I especially love the chorus on this track, with how playful and catchy the hook is. I also like the sort of video gamey samples added to the instrumental in the chorus, which give an extra quirk to the song. This tracks strength is very much in how it pulls away parts of the instrumental, and adds more layering at the appropriate time. I still would say this is one of Twice’s more creative and distinct releases from their discography, and I can say I am still a fan of this track!
